ITALIAN TRAVERTINES

Italian Travertine is characterized by a porous, vacuolar, cavernous structure, largely due to the voids left by basins' plants, which, after being incorporated by the limestone incrustations, disappeared by decomposition. The lighter and more cavernous varieties are commonly called sponge stone, or sponge, and limestone tuff.
